This exceptional silver-gilt chalice, crafted in Augsburg circa 1615 by the renowned silversmith David Roll, exemplifies the artistry and mastery of early 17th-century German craftsmanship. Additionally, the chalice is almost certainly from the prestigious collection of Baron Mayer Carl von Rothschild, one of the most renowned art collectors of the 19th century. A part of the illustrious Frankfurt Rothschild family, Baron Mayer Carl and his wife Louise amassed a vast collection of over 5,000 works of art, and this chalice is a testament to their passion for 16th-century German craftsmanship.
The chalice’s elegant form displays its richly gilded surface. Its intricate designs and ornate detailing reflect the opulence and sophistication of the era, as well as the craftsmanship that made Augsburg a hub for luxury silverware during the early 17th century.
