Their union acted as a catalyst, propelling Dyf’s work into its most mature and expressive phase. This vibrant still life reflects his ability to find beauty in the world around him.

At the heart of the composition is a striking blue and white vase overflowing with lush floral blooms. Set against a landscape dotted with trees and a far-off house, the contrast between the structured arrangement and the expansive scenery creates a dynamic interplay. The vivid blue and orange hues of the sky enhance the wild yet harmonious energy of the florals, adding to this vibrant scene.

Born as Marcel Dreyfus in 1899 in Paris, Marcel Dyf moved to Arles in 1922 to pursue a career in the arts. Largely self-taught, he developed his artistic style thanks to his exposure to the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, particularly Renoir. After establishing a studio in Arles, he soon came to attract the attention of patrons and dealers, and shortly thereafter began to exhibit his works at the Salons.

During the tumultuous years of World War II, he joined the resistance in Corrèze. After the war, he returned to Paris and started to summer in Cannes, where he drew the attention of numerous American collectors. Both a critical and commercial success, Dyf exhibited his paintings around the world, staging shows in England, America, Canada, Germany and Algeria.

This painting will be featured as number 736 in the forthcoming Marcel Dyf catalogue raisonné, compiled under the direction of his widow, Claudine Dyf.

Dated 1956

Canvas: 37 1/2" high x 45" wide x 2" deep (95.25 x 114.30 x 5.08 cm)
Frame: 28 1/8" high x 35 3/4" wide (71.44 x 90.81 cm)

Provenance:
Private Collection, St. Louis
MSR, New Orleans
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0961/6710/0706/files/32-0813_1_fe79681a-0d93-4daf-91fe-ae709c973f25.png?v=1756229696
