This extraordinary Satsuma box is signed on the underside by the artist Ryozan for the manufacturer Yasuda. Okamoto Ryozan is widely regarded as the finest and most famous Satsuma artist of the Japanese Golden Age. He worked for the Kyoto-based company Yasuda which manufactured very fine earthenware. It is also marked with the Shimazu family crest, or mon.

The sides of the box are embellished with geometric patterns and gold gilding, and the lid presents additional finely detailed figures.
