Boats are nestled peacefully, one with its sails down and another holding a fisherman inside. Magnificent and colorful buildings stand behind, creating a picturesque backdrop. This calm yet vibrant scene is a testament to the artist's ability to evoke tranquility and beauty through her creative freedom and iconic style.

Born in Morocco in 1921, Yvonne Canu traveled to Paris to study at the reputable École des Arts Décoratifs. Following the First World War, she entered the circle of the French-Japanese painter Tsuguharu Foujita and the Impressionist Élisée Maclet, both of whom profoundly influenced the development of her style. She experimented with not only the Impressionist style, but also Cubism early in her career. However, it would be the great Georges Seurat who had the most impact on her artistic aesthetic. Inspired by the artist's masterpiece A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Canu developed the pointillist style of painting for which she is famous today. Her canvases are distinctly modern, rendered with painstakingly precise dots of pure color that brilliantly blend together to form a cohesive work of art. Although her paintings indeed display the influence of Georges Seurat in both their technique and choice of subject, her style is nevertheless distinctive.

20th century

Canvas: 23 1/4" high x 28 3/8" wide (59.06 x 72.07 cm)
Frame: 32 1/8" high x 37 1/4" wide x 3" deep (81.60 x 94.62 x 7.62 cm)

Provenance:
Sale, Azur Enchères, Cannes, 16 March 2013, lot 228.
Private collection, Switzerland
Sale, Bonhams, Impressionist & Modern Art, London, New Bond Street, 18 Apr 2024.
