This unassuming bamboo cane with a carved wood handle had the macabre task of helping an undertaker measure corpses to be fitted for coffins. The knob rises to reveal a measuring stick. Since caskets were made on a “by order” basis, it was necessary for the undertaker to get precise measurements to construct his “client’s” final resting place.
