Pair of Salt Cellars
Hester Bateman
Hallmarked London, 1780

Crafted by the renowned English silversmith Hester Bateman, these exquisite salt cellars showcase a delicately pierced body encasing their original red glass liners. Adorned with Bateman's signature beading, they feature a heraldic lion rampant with a sword and are set upon a refined circular base, epitomizing Bateman's elegant style and masterful craftsmanship. These remarkable salt cellars were also part of the iconic Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.

Hester Bateman, known as the "Queen of Silver," took over the family silversmithing business following her husband's passing in 1760. Under her pioneering leadership, the company flourished until her retirement in 1790, when she entrusted the legacy to her sons and daughter-in-law, who continued the family tradition into the mid-19th century. A cornerstone of Bateman’s success was the implementation of cost-effective techniques, such as utilizing workable sheet silver.
