A sophisticated repoussé and chased gold handle tops the ebonized wood shaft of this elegant cane. Given as a gift to Henry C. Deming, the American politician and writer, the handle bears an inscription of gratitude from the Connecticut House of Representatives. Deming served as a U.S. Representative from the state of Connecticut, the mayor of Hartford, a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives and the acting military mayor of New Orleans from 1862 to 1863, when it was under martial law due to the trials of the Civil War.
