This extraordinary Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre plate showcases the rare "Roc Centre" variation of the highly coveted Imps on a Bridge and Treehouse pattern. The captivating central scene depicts pink-colored imps crossing a golden bridge with mysterious elves nearby, while a striking black Roc bird soars between the cobalt sky and emerald landscape below. The vibrant fantasy scene is richly detailed with meticulous gilding and set against a deep blue ground, creating the magical iridescent effect for which Fairyland Lustre is renowned. This exceptional plate is framed by the distinctive border motif with whimsical floral elements against a luminous gold ground, all encircled by a brilliant gilt rim.
Fairyland Lustre represents the artistic pinnacle of Wedgwood production in the early 20th century, created by the visionary designer Daisy Makeig-Jones. This particular pattern was among the final five Fairyland designs still available in 1940, just before the line was discontinued. The whimsical imps were inspired by the popular Kewpie characters created by American artist-poet Rose O'Neill, reflecting the Art Deco era's fascination with fantasy and folklore.
